Hi,
Here is the information about Lulu. I wrote this email (below) back before we had our baby so some parts might be out of date but the descriptions of Lulu will be accurate still. I wanted to include all issues so that a new home has no surprises, but I don't want to give the wrong impression either. Overall she is a very happy, doing very well, and loves people. (She is a bit scared of little kids though) I've also attached some pictures of Lulu. Let me know if you need any more info and feel free to reword this or change it as you see fit.
Thanks for all of the help,
Ryan
------------
Thank you so much for helping us find a good home for Lulu! I've attached some pictures (some recent and some as a puppy) and I have written a short description about her condition and our situation. Please let me know if anyone you know is interested. We would give away her for free (including all of her belongings) to a good home that would be willing to take care of her and give her lots of love.
Description:
Lulu is a beautiful, 2 year old silver dapple miniature dachshund. She is very friendly, playful, and likes to be held and sit on laps. She has had all of her vaccinations, but has not been spayed (It may not be possible to spay her because of her health condition, but we also don't think that she is fertile as she has not had any cycles). I would describe her as being a happy dog that has a fun personality. We would love to find a good home for Lulu, but want to make sure that the prospective new home knows her situation.
Heath Issues:
We found out that Lulu has a health problem a couple of months after owning her. Our Vet says that Lulu has a liver shunt that is not allowing proteins to be broken down properly and causing toxins to build up in her body. Before we discovered this she would get very sick and act very neurologically imbalanced. Our Vet recommended putting her on a special prescription low protein diet and giving her Lactulose and Amoxicillin with each meal to help with the toxins. (It has not been too costly because she is pretty small and I takes her along time to eat a whole bag of food) This has really helped and Lulu has lived way beyond the Vets expectations and seems to be doing very well.
Because of her health issues, we keep her away from regular dog food, and treats. We usually give her some human snack item like a cracker or chip as a treat.
There is an optional surgery that may be able to fix the liver shunt problem, but it is not a guarantee. At the time we first tested her the Vet thought it might be unsafe to use anesthesia, but her condition has improved greatly and that may be an option now.
Lingering Issues and Side Effects:
Although, I would say that a vast majority of the time Lulu seems to be doing great, she does seem to have times when she is not doing well. It is usually just a couple hours span where she seems a bit off and distant. She will wander around the house a lot when she is like this. There have been some times where this lasts for a day or more and we have had to increase the amount of medicine she was getting but she has been pretty stable for a long time now.
When she is not feeling well she does not like to be touched and will growl if someone gets to close. We try not to touch her or pick her up when she is like this. She will growl and has even bitten a couple of times. For this reason, we would not recommend that she goes to a house with very small children that would not understand to stay away during these times. She will still generally listen and obey commands like "go outside" or "kennel".
One other issue which is a side effect of her medicine is that she always thinks she is really thirsty. We have learned that we cannot give her as much water as she wants, because she will fill up completely on water then have to go to the bathroom so bad she won't even make it to the door. We usually give her water with each meal and at routine times during the day. She will let you know if she is really thirsty, but you'll need to know when to cut her off because she will sometime keep asking for more when you know she's had enough.
Although though she is potty trained, she does have some accidents. This is especially true when she is not feeling well or is in a new or strange place. Most of the time she does well.
Our Situation:
My wife and I really enjoy having Lulu, even with her condition, and it really makes us sad to give her up, but we are expecting a baby in June and have decided that we cannot risk an accident with her and the new baby. We would love to stay in contact and hear how Lulu is doing if the new owners are open to that, but understand if that is not possible. We would give away her for free (including all of her belongings) to a good home that would be willing to take care of her and give her lots of love.
Thanks,
Ryan
