Something To Be Thankful For

2014 brought many reasons to give thanks.

NATIONAL AQUARIUM
Happy Thanksgiving
What We're Thankful For

With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching, we took some time to reflect on what we're thankful for this year. The list was long, but we pulled out five of our favorites:

1. The Pacific Marine Sanctuary Expansion
The White House rocked our world in September when it expanded the Pacific Remote Islands National Marine Monument to include an area almost three times the size of California, making it the world's largest marine reserve.

2. Baby Turtles!
We welcomed several new Aquarium residents in October when four big-headed Amazon River turtles hatched in our Amazon River Forest exhibit. It's believed that this is the first time this species has been successfully bred in a North American collection.

3. A Successful Year for Blacktip Reef
Believe it or not, it's been a whole year since the opening of our coral-filled Indo-Pacific exhibit, Blacktip Reef, and our animal residents couldn't be happier in their new home!

4. Global Shark Protection
World leaders took a stand for sharks and rays this year when new United Nations-backed protections went into effect, promising tighter trade regulations of these incredible animals. Cheers to you, UN, from all us shark fanatics!

5. You!
We've had an exciting year here at the National Aquarium, and we couldn't have done it without your support. Big thanks to our donors, volunteers, members and staff for their generosity and commitment to inspiring conservation of our blue planet.

We couldn't include it all! Click the button below for more on what the Aquarium family is thankful for.
