Cougar
The Sea Turtle that Defied All Odds

The release of our latest rehabilitated sea turtle will be an emotional one for National Aquarium Animal Rescue staff. Affectionately named Cougar, the Kemp's ridley arrived at our facility on November 26, 2013, with pneumonia, infected shell fractures and a joint infection in his left front flipper. His injuries were so severe that much of our team was afraid recovery might not be possible.

But despite his rough start and long struggle to recovery, Cougar has managed to defy the odds. Animal Rescue staff has spent the past three months preparing him for his release. During this time, our staff offered live food to assess his hunting skills and transferred Cougar to a larger rehab system with a stronger current to assess his swimming and diving ability. We're very excited that Cougar passed all his tests and is ready for release!
