RE: [boxer lovers] how much food

Also look at activity levels. Now, for young puppies, you want to feed 10%
of the body weight over the course of the day. So, if you have figured, for
the sake of argument, that the dog needs 2# per day and you generally feed
twice a day, that is 1# per meal not 2# each meal.

Now, the 10% rule applies until the dog's estimated or targeted adult weight
feeding amount is reached. So, let's say that the dog will need 2# per day
as an adult (based on his estimated or target adult weight will be) when he
is 20# you no longer feed at the 10% level but leave the daily amount at 2#
per day divided over the number of times per day you feed. So, at 10# you'll
feed a pound per day as that is 10% of his current weight. Increase that
amount as the dog grows until he weighs enough that his 10% number is the
same as his 3% number is expected to be.

This allows the feeding schedule to provide for his energy needs for growth
and puppy insanity bouncing off the walls destroying everything insight
stages<G> I hope this makes sense. Believe me, it is easier to DO than it is
to explain<G>

Also, if I may, I will recommend you teach the pup some table manners. My
dogs know the line in the doorway that marks the difference between the
dining room and the kitchen. They MUST wait in a sit BEHIND that line while
I prepare the dinner and until I give them permission to come to eat. With
large breeds, this is INCREDIBLY important and this is the time to teach it
(if you aren't already) also, I would highly recommend that you teach them
to use a tablecloth. I pick up old towels from the local thrift store, old
sheets work as well. place the food on the tablecloth and watch as he eats.
Any time the food is shoved off the fabric, I step in, take the food away
and place it back on the cloth. Do this as often as needed to insure he eats
from the cloth. This will, in the long run, be something you are glad you
did.

This accomplishes two things. First, it helps keep the mess to a minimum.
Second, it teaches him that YOU are not only the source of food but that you
can and will take the food away at ANY time you choose. This will reinforce
the pack order. My doggies, at 7&8 years, will seek out a piece of fabric,
even a dropped paper napkin if need be, in order to eat their dinner off a
placemat rather than eat from the floor. They know the rules and, them being
so ingrained on them, they will work to continue following them. it IS a
good deal of work at this stage but it will make life FAR easier in the
future.

Good luck. I think you will be happy with this style of feeding.

Wow yes. Meghan gets 24-25 oz / day and she weighs in between 58-62
depending.

Its 3% of their body weight. Even figuring for his growth, if I'm figuring
right this late at night, you're feeding an 83lb boxer.

Are you figuring he'll get that big? Also, look at him. Is he fat, plump,
ok, or scrawny?
