Re: [boxer lovers] BREEDING what age should i stop breeding my boxer

She's too old for a first breeding. Actually probably too old for any breeding.

Large breed dogs like boxers only live an average of 10-12 years. Some very healthy, very lucky can make it to 14.

Compare it to people and you are wanting to have a 50+ year old have multiple babies. Possibly doable but not advisable.

If you breed are you ready to cover $1200 in emergency C-Section expense? Pay the cost at 3 days old for the vet exam, tail docking and dew claw removal? Any special care for the butch if needed? Pay extra for prenatal vitamins for the bitch and better food? Her diet needs to be boosted while she's carrying.

And what are you planning to do with any puppies? No matter how many people say "Oh. I'd love to have a puppy from your dogs!" if you don't have cash in hand, you have no sold puppies. What if you can't sell them? Are you prepared to give a home to 1 - 7 more dogs with annual shots. Extra food?

Your bitch is elderly. Are you prepared to lose her? Pregnancy can be rough on a young dog, let alone an elderly one. What happens if you lose her after the pups are born? Are you set up and capable of providing round the clock care for at least the first 2 or 3 weeks?
