We have just been told that our 5 year old boxer has Spondylosis.
We were devastated. We are now able to talk about it and are making changes for our dog.
We found out that he has this condition on Monday when he suffered a seizure. We thought that he had something stuck in his throat and so we did an ex-ray which in turn showed his spine and the amount of fusing done. The seisure was triggered from pain from his spine and also he was very bloated.
We now realize that his aggression and slow right leg, small amount of dragging his nails and always wanting to rest during walks and limping for a few days after an aggressive play time with one of the few dogs that he gets along with. We just thought that he had pulled a muscle from the play time.
Our vet has told us that there is nothing that could be done for him and that we are to use pain killers to control the pain. We are also not allowed to let him play or jump as this could cause more damage. This is so hard to do with him, he loves running around the backyard and jumping around.
We are so lucky to have a friend who knows a specialist in this area and will be assessing him soon. We have been told that she gets remarkable results with the therapy. I am willing to do the therapy but afraid from the vets request that we should avoid all contact with his back. He is a +3 in his spine.
Has anyone ever had this condition in their dog before and if so what did you do and how advanced was the condition? I would like to understand the future for my dog. I had dogs while I grew up but this is my first dog in a long time. We have had this dog from 8 weeks of age. Any advice will be appreciated. Also, should I use a collar still or harness???
Ninkie.
