Re: [boxer lovers] Service training

No, I'm afraid I don't know of a service dog trainer/trainin center in your area.  Perhaps if you do a Google search for "service dog, mobility service dog, coity, state" you will find several to call and talk to.  That's a big area so for sure should be a couple.

Good luck by all means!

I'm I Chattanooga TN, if you know a school you can recommend that would be great. Mischief is not deaf. We made certain before we bought him.  Yes, I knew it would take time to prep and train him, especially for work in public.

Thank you for responding. I'd love to know more.

Karon, Boxers "can" make great service dogs, but there are a lot of things to consider, evaluate, on whether a particular one will work for a person as a service dog.  What you are talking about is a "mobility" assistant.  My experience is with Guide Dogs for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and I'm starting on my third, all whites by the way. It doesn't matter what color, a Boxer is a Boxer.  Of course saying that, you shouldn't try to use a deaf one for a service dog I wouldn'tthink at least.

Since you have never done this I would certainly recommend you talk with one of the training schools for service dogs.  There's groups all over the country that do this, and not knowing where you live I can't offer any suggestions.

One thing I will say, do not use Mischief, the 5 month old yet by any means.  First thing is working to train in obedience by all means.  That you could attend classes for at a training school, not PetSmart though by any means.  A good training club/center.  You want to do all the obedience work and socialization big time.

Good luck.

So, I broke my back in January. I have just been diagnosed with VERY brittle bones. Bending over to pick things up is painful. I can't lift things, and some help getting out of bed or standing from my chair would be great. Mischief is white and of very nice bloodlines, currently 4 months old.

Has anyone had a Boxer trained for service? How do they do? I'm also thinking of dog carting with him and Tangle if she is up to it.

Any info would be gratefully accepted.
