Re: [boxer lovers] Service training

I have had several of our Boxers sold for Service Dogs and are evaluated
with out any failures.
All have been exceptional. In part because they tend to be a bit calmer
than some of the other working lines that are sent for Service Training.
I have 1 actually doing guide work with a blind gentleman
Three at least are working with "problem teens" and 2 have gone for
working with war vets as therapy dogs and *excel* at that. Some of the
Boxers actually go to the Veteran hospitals to visit, socialize and cheer
up those veterans that are hospital bound - again, they absolutely excel at
this!
I believe a Boxer works well at any task given to them as our own are
actually working cattle dogs. We also had border collies but when our
last one passed, we have stuck with the Boxers. they are very keen and
love having a 'job'. I would always recommend that even a good old home
buddy Boxer be given a 'job' that is theirs alone, and it can be of almost
any description. they really really love the 'responsibility.
I totally agree with Rachel. Mischief is too young to go into that sort of
advanced training and what he needs at this time is beginning obedience,
and then through to intermediate and formal obedience. Play, learn,
associate, gentle handling, firm but kind, gentle training so as to not
break the spirit. *All * play, is actually a form of" learning". People
OR puppies, cats, horses and even birds!
So even in "play"* age-appropriate* learning should be started
*"Age appropriate" *being the key words. Before one can expec*t* *adult*
behaviour from child or dog, they need to reach adult age, first going
through a happy puppy/childhood while learning tasks for that level, and so
on. *You* can surely learn while Mischief learns but only if you have
professional help in order to do so.
Pretty well anyone can train a young dog/older puppy to sit, stay, lay
down, fetch and other low key lessons - very important lessons - but not
*eveyone* can then continue with more formal and intense lessons without
having been trained themselves, to be a trainer.
It is an awesome, wonderful good feeling to have a well mannered and
intelligent obedient pet friend, and even more so when YOU learn to do this
task as well.
Good luck. It is an inspiring goal!
