Re: [boxer lovers] New to the boxer world

Welcome to the the wonderful life with Boxers! My life was made wonderful in 1956 and I've never had a reason to regret it.

My Meg (9 year old reverse brindle) has horrible allergies. Look at the ingredients of any dog food, even the best brands, and THAT'S what she's allergic to. Along with that she's sensitive to most grasses. The vet gave her a simple blood test that was sent to a lab to find out what her sensitivities are. With her it started as plain itching. However she has advanced in her food allergies such that a BITE Of chicken or turkey and she has massive hives. Meg eats 100% beef (she can have pork, venison, rabbit or bison but all those need special prep). The hives from chicken pop up instantly and huge. Chicken, turkey and eggs no longer enter my house.

But she does ‎also get simpler smaller hives from grass. Yep she's allergic to grass. Dogs can also get hives from insect bites. Dogs tend to show their allergy with itching and hives rather than breathing problems like humans.

ALWAYS REMEMBER WE ARE NOT VETERINARIANS HERE. We can share our problems and solutions but you should ALWAYS Check with your vet. Meg takes simple Benadryl for her grass allergy. As I said, her reaction to chicken is so quick and fierce I don't even bring it into the house so there's no way she can get any. I feed raw. And she gets good beef because of her food allergies. She also gets a VET PRESCRIBED Maintenance dose of Benadryl which is 2 tablets at least twice a day and up to 3 times a day. But Meg is also fill grown, not a puppy.

So you should have your puppy checked by the vet. It's possible you can pin down the general possible cause (does she get hives after eating? After going outside? ) And the fix may be as simple as removing the problem (like my removing the chicken) or if the reaction is mild enough (Meg's grass allergy means she pops up small hives but they don't really seem to bother her), with a treatment, even daily, with An antihistamine like Benadryl.
