There are about 270 species of elapids alive today. Elapids are venomous snakes with hollow venom fangs and bright coloration.
| Reptiles Reptiles (Reptilia) are a diverse group of vertebrates that includes creatures such as snakes, worm lizards, lizards, alligators, caimans, crocodiles, tortoises, turtles, and tuataras. There are approximately 7900 species of reptiles alive today that inhabit a wide range of temperate and tropical habitats including deserts, forests, freshwater wetlands, mangroves and open ocean.
| Squamates Squamates (Squamata) are the most diverse of all the reptile groups, with approximately 7400 living species. Squamates include lizards, snakes, and worm-lizards.
| Lizards Lizards (Lacertilia) are the most diverse group of squamates, consisting of more than 4500 species belonging to groups as iguanas, chisel-teeth lizards, chameleons, geckos, night lizards, blind lizards, skinks, anguids, beaded lizards and many others.
