When Pete was so ill and I took him to Purdue Vet school hoping they could help, EVERY time I came home without him, Meggie looked for him. She'd check me out, look through the gate at the truck and then she'd search the backyard before accepting he wasn't with me.
Until the final day when the Vets called to tell me to come, now, and we made the decision he had no more fight left and I sat with him while he went to the Bridge. When I got home, Meggie didn't look for him. She did stick very close to me as we both grieved. I don't know she knew.

Subject: [boxer lovers] Thoughts on handling putting a pet down
First, PLEASE know I am NOT planning to put either of my dogs down any time soon. Sadly, though, my boxers are 8 and 9 years old. This means that this decision may soon be upon me. I hate it but I begin to notice my babies slowing down and more and more white creeping into the muzzles.
Anyway, I had read, somewhere, that, as we all know, dogs mourn dead members of their pack. I had also read that, if they are able to physically see and smell the dog which has passed on, they mourn les time. I had discussed with my family about the time to come when we will lose one of our dear boxers.
I told my daughter that when the time comes that one must be put down, I am going to take them both to the vet so that the dogs will be together to comfort one another. I feel that it makes sense to see that the surviving dog would acknowledge the loss of their packmate but knowing, for certain, that their packmate was gone, would not be searching for their packmate and watching for them to come home.
