We have a lot of high kill shelters here in SoCal and unfortunately massive over breeding of boxers. Even with multiple great boxer rescues, so many just don't make it. However, we have an amazing village that manages to pull together and rescue many of the seniors and/or medical dogs. So often the save happens at the 11th and a half hour. Today was the 11th hour and 59 mins for Moose, a blind boxer.
The shelter said he was 8, but none of us think he's that old. This shelter gets the ages sooo wrong. Remember the supposed 16 year old I posted about? I rescued her on my own. She turned out to be 3-4 years old and she was adopted by the most wonderful couple after about 6 weeks.
Moose will be seeing my vet on Tuesday and getting neutered and they'll be able to give us a better indication of his age. He doesn't have a single gray hair. On Friday he goes to the doggie eye doctor. I'm taking care of his neuter and we raised about $500 for him so far. I have no doubt we'll be able to raise more if needed. My sister stepped in to foster, but it's tough because she also took in another foster rescue this week and her hubby is a bit stressed to say the least.
Rescue backed us on the pull so we could get a medical waiver to get him a proper neuter and is taking him to their doggie eye doctor where they get a discount and will promote him as if he is one of their own. They aren't backing us for any of his medical bills, which I'm not overly worried about as I've seen that we can always manage to pull together enough fundraising to help a dog in urgent need.
My question for all of you is how hard is it going to be to find a home for a blind boxer? The reason rescue couldn't fully back him is because it can take forever to home a special needs dog and they are full. If something happened with my sister fostering they literally have no place for him. They just took a 9 year old with cancer yesterday and the day before took another ill senior. Amazing group! I absolutely adore sachi animal rescue (all boxer rescue).
I only met him for an hour last night and that was at the shelter. Still, I could see he was a great boxer. My sister isn't even a boxer person and after less than 12 hours with him she already wants to keep him and not the lab rescue. She's a lab person. So, I think we have one of those extra special boxers on our hands and it's remotely possible that his blindness can be fixed with surgery. If that was the case, he'd be way easy to home. There is no way her husband is going to let her keep him though so we need to start working on a forever.
It takes at least a week before you even know enough about these shelter dogs to start posting them for adoption. Until he sees the doggie eye doctor we can't start posting about him. I can alternate some time with her in the name of both of us staying married :) Still, I don't think she's going to be able to foster him long term without undue stress on her relationship. Do you think someone would adopt a blind boxer? I mean I know SOMEONE will, but is it going to be really hard to find this sweet boy a home? I'm worried about what we took on. My sister has ownership, but she did this largely because of me so I'm totally responsible for him too.
