[boxer lovers] Bogie Bear has Liver Shunts / Copper Toxicity

This is for sure one I'd never heard of, on any of the lists, at
least that I can recall, in my own Boxers, or any of the 1000's of
rescues that have come through GOBR over the many years. If anyone
has any experience with this PLEASE let me know about it, your
treatment, diet and so on as well as prognosis.

Bogie started not wanting to eat much and was loosing weight a couple
months back. We were testing and at first nothing was showing up. We
switched flavors of food and did get him to start eating, but he
continued to loose weight, no matter how much we supplemented with
goodies and so on.

Blood chemistry showed EXTREMELY high liver enzyme levels a little
over a month ago. We went to get an ultrasound. Liver was "slightly
small for a dog his size", gall bladder was normal, but gall duct
looked "inflamed". Two weeks later, this was after he was eating good
again on new flavor of same food with extras added in, he had lost
another 2 lbs and his liver enzymes had come down dramatically,
however were still really high. There was discussion of doing a liver
biopsy, but since the enzymes had "improved" was decided to wait and
retest them 2 weeks later. Well, the liver enzymes went SKY HIGH
again and he had lost another 4 lbs. So, an appointment was made with
the Internist to get the biopsy done.

Wednesday we went for the biopsy of his liver. When the Internist and
Oncologist did the ultrasound this time, his liver was very, very
small. They were afraid to do a biopsy, scared with it being so small
and hiding behind the spleen, they'd wind up hitting it instead. So
it was decided to do an angiogram (a splenoportogram) where they put
the contrast in the spleen. Two liver shunts were seen clearly on
this, one large and extending to near his right kidney. The other
smaller and just going out to nowhere per se.

It has been explained that this normally happens in smaller breeds.
While it can be an inherited tendency or an acquired one, it is
brought on by copper toxicity from ingestion. It is AMAZING how much
copper, and other metals are in dog food. Supposedly the "designer
foods" are worse than the regular kibbles, and raw feeding has the
most. That's because cooking helps to take out a lot of the
minerals/metals in the blood/meat.

Why Bogie has this, nobody can explain it since he does not eat raw,
has not been killing and eating any animals in the yard or anything.
He doesn't run the woods and fields to be able to do this without our
knowledge either.

Our vet didn't have any LD in stock, but ordered it for us and we'll
be picking it up in the morning. He is to have NO meat at all, no
meat byproducts, nothing like that. He is to have the LD (similar to
KD for kidney diets) mixed with human things such as macaroni and
cheese, cottage cheese, rice, noodles, cream of wheat, eggs, and some
milk, though too much milk would probably cause diarrhea.

In all our baby boy who just turned 4 on 22 December, has lost 14
pounds. Even after he was eating good, as much as he would eat, he
kept loosing weight. He is now on a high carb diet with no meat
protein at all, just dairy protein, and is to be allowed to eat as
much as we can get him to eat in hopes that his liver will start
repairing itself and that he'll gain weight.

It HURTS so much to look at his bony body, with tons of muscle still
obvious from his former self.

Again, if you, or anyone you know, has any experience with this,
please pass on to others who may, and please respond with any
experiences and helpful advice. Keep this sweet boy in your thoughts
and prayers please.
