There is a blood test that can be run to find out what your dog is
allergic to. The complete "panel" is pricey (depends on what your vet
charges) but you should be able to just get the "food panel" for about
half the full panel price. It does sound like food allergies -- my
Meghan is the poster child for "I can't eat much of anything." Thing is,
she is REALLY REALLY REALLY allergic to chicken. Didn't use to be. As
yhe allergy started manifesting, she was just scratching enough.. Then
it moved to scratching hair off. Eventually, it became little tiny
hives. Last time she managed to grab a piece of chicken, about the size
of a 50 cent piece if it was "fat" -- Big Giant HIVES. Chicken is not
allowed in the house.
On top of that, she's allergic to Eggs, Turkey, Peanuts (and therefore
Peanut Butter), Brewers Yeast, alfalfa, and border line soy. Pumpkin and
duck causes vomiting. Look at almost any major dog food, even the pricey
ones, and you're almost seeing the ingredients panel. Along with her, my
young male (I lost a year ago) was allergic to Carrots, Wheat Barley
Oats, White Potatoes and borderline chicken/turkey. That's why I went to
raw -- and all beef, at that. This time of year, I do get some venison
-- but that needs freezing for several weeks or cooking before serving,
as does pork.
The itching can be causing him to have a compromised immunity system so
that a normal bug that wouldn't usually cause him trouble gets a chance
to take off. Make sure you are giving him his full dose of antibiotics
(however many days the vet says). Look at the ingredients of SD Z/D food
vs the Canidae. That may tell you quickly what he's allergic to.
