Know what you want. If you want a quality pup and are interested in
supporting RESPONSIBLE breeding, go to responsible breeders!. You find them
through the ABC website. The American Boxer Club lists member breeders.
There is a general application on the website. Fill out the application and
be honest. They will ask if you plan to show or plan to buy a pet puppy. Be
honest.
Once you have submitted that, the ABC will forward your application to
member breeders planning pups or with pups on the ground. The breeders will
then begin contacting you. they'll talk to you in extensive conversations on
the phone and get to know you. you need to understand that the more
questions they ask, the better the breeder will probably be. At least at
placing their pups.
So, spend some time and ask questions. And, of course, answer them. take
notes and refine what you want in a pup. In the end, you will be VERY
pleased with the pup you purchase.
You WILL spend more on this pup than you will on a pup you find on Craig's
list or in the paper.
What the breeders want to know, at least, the GOOD breeders, is what kind of
lifestyle you live? How will the dog live? Inside, outside, frequency of
walks and exercise, show, socializations and so on. What you want to ask is
about why the parents were bred. What competitions did the parents or
grandparents enter to prove they were worthy of breeding. what makes these
dogs worthy to breed? have they been health tested and ALWAYS ask for copies
of the health test results. The breeder WILL judge you by whether you demand
those papers. Asking for them is GOOD.
Now, you will pay more for a puppy with worthy parents and health testing.
But, in the long run, it will really be less expensive. The dog will likely
live longer, be happier because it is healthier and cost you less in vet
bills. It is WELL worth the time, aggravation and expense.
You might want to inform your vet you are in a puppy search and give them
permission to talk about you. responsible breeders WILL ask about your vet
and ask for their contact info. They will also contact your vet and ask
about how often you bring in your pet, do you keep your vet on preventive
meds, are your pets in the best health possible.
So, this is the best route to a great pup. A well bred pup.
If that is not necessarily your goal, if you are interested in a rescue
organization, and an adult dog (probably) look around at the local rescue
organizations in your area. Talk to the folks who run the groups. They will
want to know some of the same things and have a similar application process.
they will also have similar conversations with you and will do similar
background checks. They will also be looking at your lifestyle and the
family life, professional life and what other dogs may already be in the
home. remember, they have dogs that may have problems with other dogs, may
be uncomfortable around one sex human or the other, have problems with
children. This often has to do with previous abuse, nothing to do with you.
This seems like a cumbersome process. and, to a degree, it is. But it is for
a reason. The people who do this are concerned about the animals in their
care. You should be glad to see that because you know the animal you are
adopting has been in good hands and is likely to be well matched to you.
Just to give you some ideas of good ways to find a pup.

You could look at them to evaluate what they have. I just saw a listing on
Crigslist for my area for a 3yr old female. Owner was moving and couldn't
take her with. It was free
Almost got her but I already have have 2 so am gonna stop there.

So, what is the best way to avoid getting a puppy from a puppy mill? When
searching online for breeders, I tend to skip over anything that's Craigs
list, Amazon, or with forsale in the web address. Does that mean I am
missing good breeders by not using sites like doggies.com and hoobly.com?
I would prefer to work with someone in VA, NC, TN or WV.
