Well, speaking as one of the jerks who usually spends a fortune on
fireworks, I totally agree with (almost) all of this statement. think of
your dogs (and cats) this weekend. Best bet is to keep them either in a
crate at night or in a bedroom with a person.
However, if they start the shaking, fear reaction, try not to offer love and
comfort like you do with a child. They don't understand the same way your
kids do. that only tells them this is a proper response to loud noises. Try
to offer them something to distract them. a chew toy, a training practice or
just put them in their crate, perhaps with a blanket over the crate to
muffle the sound. The crate should be a safe place and this is a perfect
time to reinforce that.
Also, be certain that if you are outside watching the fireworks, you have
the dog in a crate rather than free in the house. Don't take them with you.
they don't really care about the bright lights, they aren't patriotic and
the explosions hurt their ears.
For future reference, it is also a good idea to have a crate around for your
cat for Halloween. We have an outside cat that is an all black cat. She
HATES Halloween. Not because of all the people but because we crate her for
about three days or keep her in one of the bedrooms inside for a few days.
This is for her protection. There are some really sick people in the world.
and cats, especially black cats, are in danger at Halloween. Either crate
them or bring them in. even if, like Salem, they HATE being inside.

Subject: [boxer lovers] July 4th Weekend
For those of you in the US, this is the biggest weekend for lost dogs! Even
the sanest, calmest most obedient dog can get completely freaked by the loud
whistle and bang of fireworks. And in every neighborhood there is that one
jerk who spent a small fortune on fireworks and needs to set them off ...
night after night after night.
Keep your animals in doors as much as possible. Go outside with them when
you let them out so if they panic they can SEE you. Hopefully they'll run to
you and not away.
Make sure your fences are secure and your gates firmly closed. If you walk
on a leash make sure you have some non-slip (out of) collar. Indoors I keep
a radio or TV on and playing loouder than to help mask the noise.
I hope you all have a safe amd happy holiday ... and that your pups survive
the human idiocy.
