The "faithful" about taking them out is important, very important, but you can get a huge, huge way in potty training with dogs this old in just the summer and fall now that it is warming up. You CAN train them to even go out in the cold and rain [well, if it's not raining TOO hard--mine will hold it for hours and hours if it's pouring.] I'm convinced the secret is in rewards. Go bananas when they potty--just as they finish and start to move away--not while they're in the middle of it. Just yay, good girl, clap your hands, grin, smile, laugh, it's a big deal!etc. hug if they like hugging and treat treat treat. The treats can quickly go down to one per potty, but the good girl should go on basically forever. Keep up the treats a long long time with these doggies that have been pottying in the house. Mine is 5 and still gets a treat for pottying outside at night before I go to bed. In the winter it's cold as heck and I think it's worth a treat every night. You'd have to treat me to put my butt down on frozen grass to teetee. The moment they potty inside--mid poop if you can do it--take them outside without any kind of talking. You might say, No potty inside - Lady potty outside. [My dog is Lady]. Then when you just take them outside and see that they are going to potty, try to get in the words, potty outside or whatever you want to call it. Why? They learn to understand your words. When you say it enough, Lady, potty outside is a command, and they can do it. No potty inside--handled right becomes a clear signal. These pups really love to please you. They also love, love, love to eat. Pleasing you and eating at the same time--it can't be beaten. You could teach them to stand on their heads with those two together!

They will learn if u are faithful in taking them out and other stuff. I was trying to do the right thing from the start, but my hubby interfered and it fell by the way side. He would let her go out in the winter time and did not want her to be crate trained,so as result of that she will not go outsideat all and she is in our hall near my room. I cant go the bathroom close to my room at night I have to go to the other. please be faithful and it will pay off.DonnaFrom: Theresa DeWolf <dogzlady@yahoo.com>

I've only had my boys for a month and I'm so crazy about them I'll shampoo the carpet every week for the rest of their lives, if I have too. However, I have every hope they'll learn.

www.k9assistantsllc.comI have been faithful and will take him out every 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours....and he still....will just go on the floor if he feels like it. I get so frustrated with him...and he knows he did bad.....but all I can do is clean it up. I don't spank him or anything....I just tell him "bad" and he does know....they are very smart..

Dottie has use them from the first. she still misses every now and then. She has messed up the carpet and we have had to replace the rug with a new floor. I rather mop than shampoo the rug any day.donna

I WISH I could get Harley to use potty pads.....but all he likes to do is chew them up! I have thought about trying that dog potty "patch" that looks like indoor/outdoor grass on a base....kinda expensive, but would be worth it if he would use it rather than the carpet!!!

I thought we were good at housebreaking, too....but my shorthaired red mini, Harley....has definitely proved us wrong! He is almost 3 and goes outside when HE decides he wants to....UGH! Our other dog is a 4 yr old malti-poo who is completely housebroke...Harley just seems to have a mind of his own....especially if it is wet or snowing out...lol. Thank goodness he is sooo cute...lol.Connie

I sent you a friend request. I have two dachsie boys, Sam almost 9 months, a black and cream longhair, and Mac who is 7 months, a red cream smooth. They are my first dachsies in almost 40 years, and they are so much fun! Except, having the usual problems housebreaking. I used to think I was really good at housebreaking, but these boys are a challenge.
