Re: [boxer lovers] Boxer's fur falling out in patches.

Two things come to mind. Mange, which any dog carries but a lowered immune system can make them susceptible. I'll presume your vet has checked this. The other is a thyroid problem. Is he also a little chunky? Seems to gain weight even when he's not eating that much? I've fought this now for about 20 years... until I found out (when my 3rd dog, second boxer) was diagnosed with low thyroid. Research found out that Fluoridated water(!!!) can damage the thyroid. When Meg showed up with thyroid after Pete (Boxer) and Wise (the first and a cocker), I immediately quit using city water for the dogs and myself. Meg's been on bottled spring water for over 8 years now and her condition hasn't worsened. She's still on the initial low dose she started with while the other two had to have increases amounts of dosage as they aged. Pete finally leveled out when he also went on bottled water with Meg. But by then he was on a. 45 dose when the starting dose had been .25.

Have your vet check thyroid (if he hasnt) and if it's positive either get a water filter THAT REMOVES FLUORIDE (not all do, for example Britain and Pur don't unless they've changed) or use bottled spring water. You can get a MUCH better cost for thyroid from one of the online dog stores (I found Dr's. Foster and Smith to have the best price, YMMV). Your vet should have no problem writing a prescription. The online sites will contact your vet for the Rx.

If it's neither if those, the only other thing it might be that I know of is not enough of the right fats in his diet.

Subject: [boxer lovers] Boxer's fur falling out in patches.

Hi All,

I have two Boxers, Bella-7, Leo-5.  We have noticed Leos bald patches recently, he looks like a brindle instead of a flashy tan.  Bella has had this problem for a few years.  Have had her skin tested, it comes back fine.  The skin is healthy, just lacking fur.

Has anyone had this problem before?  Is it a boxer thing?

Is there something we can do to get the fur to grow back?  We think it might be lack of Vitamin D during the winter months.

TIA
