Re: [boxer lovers] Cardiomyopathy

Hi Lisa,

I'm sorry to hear about you and your mother's pup, but happy that you got 4 years with her after her diagnosis. In my case I only got 10 months and imagine the costs of all these meds and procedures these days. It was very expensive to keep him going, but as your family did I did what I had to keep my boy going. This all happened in 2011. Four years later and I suspect my current female may have had an episode herself. I went looking for a cardiomyopathy group on Facebook and could not believe that there wasn't one. With such a serious and mysterious disease effecting so many, how could there not be a single support group? Well, there is now. I wish it didn't need to exist because that would mean no ARVC, but this is the reality for so many. Hopefully this new group with offer help and encouragement for some. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the idea. One of my pups became my mother's and subsequently developed cardiomyopathy. As far as I know, the only one in the litter that did. This was in the early 80's and there were no local doggie heart doctors in the area. Our vet would "hook Maggie up" and then through a dial up modem (yes, dial up! No DSL or cable then), send the cardiogram to a NY vet for reading. Maggie was given 6 months but lasted more than 4 years on the VERY expensive heart med (at that time about $50/month). Scary stuff but treatable. We can only hope with more study, this becomes less of an issue for our babies

Hi everyone,

I wanted to pass a note on to everyone about a new group that I just started on Facebook regarding Cardiomyopathy. As boxer owners we'll all most likely have to deal with this awful disease at one point or another. I lost my first to it in 2011 and I think the female I have no may have had an episode herself this week. I went looking for a support group and to my surprise there wasn't one! I had to change that. There has to be a support group this. Period! So, it's not limited to just boxers so any and everyone is welcome to join if you'd like to invite others to join as well.

Thanks,
- Mandy
