Moon Jellies
5 Reasons Moon Jellies are Marvelous

Did you know? When deprived of food, moon jellies can shrink to one-tenth of their normal size to save energy!

Here are a few other little-known facts about these gelatinous gems:
  1. Jellies have no brains, bones or hearts and are made almost entirely of water.
  2. These jellies haven't made it to the moon, but they have been to space! In May 1991, 2,478 moon jellies (in their early life stages) were launched into orbit on the space shuttle Columbia as part of a study on jellies and weightlessness.
  3. The moon jelly's horseshoe-shaped reproductive organs can be seen through its translucent white, saucer-shaped bell.
  4. A moon jelly's bell can grow up to 12 inches wide, about the size of a dinner plate!
  5. Short, delicate, fringe-like tentacles hang from the jelly's bell margins. Although these tentacles contain stinging cells, their effect isn't noticeable to humans.

We're happy to report that our grey seal patient, Lily, is ready for release! Lily was first admitted to our facility on Easter, suffering from a broken jaw. Our Animal Health team has been closely monitoring Lily's progress, and is happy to report that Lily's jaw has healed without surgical intervention!
