Re: [boxer lovers] Thoughts on handling putting a pet down

Nana
Last March I got Yukon and Gemini from the APL, my vet thought they were 7 years old.  They have never been apart  even through twice they were either in the APL or a pound.  Gem just now has started to be comfortable leaving the room that Yukon is in, but only to follow me, (she is a needy girl).  Trips to the vet I always take both no matter who needs it.  He on the other hand takes very good care of her but doesn't seem the same need to keep his eye on her.  If she gets wet outside h can't stand it he licks her dry, face, body , legs and feet.  I guess I would take the other when the day comes, not sure I will be able to stand it though.

I would do it although I dint know the outcome, because I didn't do it when one of my two brother boxers died snd the other grieved forever. He changed his personality and he looked for him constantly. I dont know if it would make a difference, but I would try it.

First, PLEASE know I am NOT planning to put either of my dogs down any time soon. Sadly, though, my boxers are 8 and 9 years old. This means that this decision may soon be upon me. I hate it but I begin to notice my babies slowing down and more and more white creeping into the muzzles.

Anyway, I had read, somewhere, that, as we all know, dogs mourn dead members of their pack. I had also read that, if they are able to physically see and smell the dog which has passed on, they mourn les time. I had discussed with my family about the time to come when we will lose one of our dear boxers.

I told my daughter that when the time comes that one must be put down, I am going to take them both to the vet so that the dogs will be together to comfort one another. I feel that it makes sense to see that the surviving dog would acknowledge the loss of their packmate but knowing, for certain, that their packmate was gone, would not be searching for their packmate and watching for them to come home.

What do you all think on this topic?
