Short of a structural problem, one thing that can affect how a dog walks
is the length of their nails. From "show" litters or "show" breeders,
you will find the puppies' nails crop fairly short. This is to keep the
dog "up" on its pads. The nails do not touch the ground. These are
called "cat's feet" and are considered proper -- at least for showing.
Most people don't keep their dogs nails trimmed that short (generally,
it's best done using a grinding device ... like a Dremel, not one of the
"battery operated" pet nails grinders.
Nails too long will force the dog back one what we could thing of as
their heels and is improper and causes stress on the dog's feet and legs.
A happy medium is keeping the nails trimmed short-ish. If you let the
nails go too long, the quick will grow out into the nail. Trimming close
can help make them recede some, but care has to be taken that you don't
cut the quick and cause bleeding. It both hurts the dog and can leave
them open to infection.
