I have Ben, my goofy and reliable Boxer, and Sam my cunning and too smart for his own good Cattle Dog. I know, strange motley crew! Ben is the one that every morning at about 7am rain, cold, shine, or warmth will whine and pace and DEMAND he be let out, while Sam will quietly keep peace til about 9:30 am if allowed, however the rest of the day is spent with Sam telling us through high pitched yips every 30-45 minutes he want OUT NOW!!!!!!! That is followed by them going out and Sam oeeing a dribble and then they both BARK for the bark of it, usually started by Sam. Ben is louder, so when they get called in and reprimanded Sam is LAUGHING at Ben, and Ben feels bad that he displeased me.
We love the two dogs equally, but, this is how it works around here, Sam is slightly younger but has hip dysplasia and is the complete brains in this house. Ben is not a stupid dog, but he takes his time learning new tasks. Sam is NOT sensitive or appologetic, only demanding or guilty! (when sam feels guilty he makes a bee line for his crate and stays put for hours without the door shut) Ben is incredibly sensitive and appologetic, he is perpetually worried and thinks he should curl up on everyone in the family. When he is made to back off he is sorry he exists. When Sam solicits attention he will paw at you until you place your hand EXACTLY where he wanted it and you scratch him.
Ben takes it easy on Sam all the time and is very kind and gentle. Sam is rough on Ben and will bite his neck and jowls, Ben only paws at Sam and nibbles. Sam makes the rules between the dogs, and Ben follows them, yowling when he is displeased by them.
I love both the dogs, but Ben is my favorite, while Sam is my other half and my daughters favorite!
