Indy is an adorable 5 year old Boxer who is UTD on vaccines, spayed, and
healthy. She was released by her owner when they were unable to care for
her any longer. She was released with her daughter, a mixed breed dog, and
they had always been together and well cared for in the home. Indy's
daughter was adopted rather quickly and poor Indy has been lingering at the
shelter for over a month with no interest. Indy's stress level has gone up
significantly in the past week, she is now becoming more distressed in her
kennel and her eyes are constantly red-rimmed. Indy deserves to be happy and
will make a wonderful pet; she's a family dog who is declining quickly in
the shelter environment.
Indy did great on her temperament test except in the area of guarding.
She did display food and toy guarding behaviors. She would need a home that
understands these issues and will work on them or manage them. Other than
that, Sissy is a total doll-baby. She knows a few commands, she is very
friendly and social, and she gets along very well with other dogs; even
tolerating some of the more "obnoxious" dogs as her kennel-mates. She was our
"demo dog" for a children's animal handling class yesterday and did very
well with the kids. We recommend a home with older children for Indy, only
due to her guarding response. She's great with other dogs and we don't
anticipate her to do poorly with cats and would do a cat test for any
interested applicant or rescue. Indy still wiggles with excitement when you
approach her kennel, but most people have simply passed her by. The look of
confusion and stress on her face at this happens time after time is too much.
