Hello, Kimberly!
We're a short hair dachshund family also, but Sophi is special.
We've been living in Okinawa, Japan for the last five years. Ever since we moved here we've been looking for short hair dachshunds and dachshund breeders - no luck. It seems the Japanese prefer long haired dachshund.
On Halloween day 2010 we went to the pet shop to look around. There were a couple of dachshunds - all of them were long haired. 2 of them were almost 6 months old. One was a black and tan and the other one was red. They were just growing up in that tiny little glass cage - I felt so bad. We were worried about what would happen to them if no one bought them - they had been marked down in price many times and they were still there.
We couldn't take both, so we ended up with black and tan. She has a couple of problems. She has Luxating Patella (slipping knee cap) on her rear knee and Nasolacrimal Occlusion ( a blockage of the tear drainage system) on left eye. And she has potty training issues, possibly from living in that little box for so long.
I know what you mean about longhairs personality. Sophi is my first longhair dachshund and she is really different than my smooth hairs. I'm not used to all the extra grooming, either.
I attached some of Sophi's pictures. I hope you will enjoy these photos.

oh my goodness those are beautiful babies.....I have never owned a long hair are their personalities different from the smoothies. I have 3 smoothies my Joey is lazy and laid back, my Hannah is a trouble maker, and Taffy is still coming out of her shell, she's a former puppy mill dog that i was fostering but decided to adopt. Taffy so far has been very docile and she's not very vocal. Joey and Hannah are red smoothies and Taffy is a red dapple.

Dachshunds are like potato chips, you can't have just one.
