A genetic disorder can appear at any point in any generation. Being of a
pure bloodline does not mean there CAN BE no genetic defect, it just means
one has not shown up. That is why EVERY dog that is bred should be tested
for genetic defects BEFORE breeding. if a dog tests positive for any genetic
defect, it should be spayed or neutered, whether the defect is visible or
not. My Tovi is of pure lines and champion stock, yet, after all the testing
in her line, she still developed epilepsy. For that reason, she was spayed.
We don't know what caused her epilepsy so we don't take ANY chances and we
don't breed her.
Despite her beautiful parentage and her own beautiful conformation, she has
a defect which MAY BE genetic and COULD be passed on to her young and
theirs. For that reason, I made the responsible choice not to breed her and
had her spayed.
That is what responsible owners do when they know there is a problem, defect
or inheritable illness in their animal.

Karon,
I am not being smart alect here, I am seriously wondering...is there a why
to know you don't have any genetic defect SOMEWHERE down the line that could
reappear in one of your puppies? I mean is there a limit of generations
without any defects that would be considered a a pure line... or can a
defect show up from as many as ...say ... 10 generations back? I use to
believe from something I read that after 7 generations of pure bred dogs the
line was pure...but that does not mean the genetic genes are not able to
show up anymore...does it?
