Well... instead going in detail here I'm going to make it easy for both of us. Please buy and read the book: dog photography for dummies
http://m.examiner.com/small-dogs-in-los-angeles/dog-photography-for-dummies
I'm personal friends with the authors and I actually reviewed the book and thought it was a great overview of the equipment out there etc. Great resource for beginners.
After reading it, you'll have a better idea if you should buy a compact (digital point and shoot) or the more robust and advance SLR digital camera.
Compacts make it easy for most novices but have more restrictions - low light, speed, etc. SLRs allow you greater control over shutter speed, aperture, depth of field, ISO but...with greater control comes greater responsibility to know and understand what all that means. :-}
Additionally SLR cameras, lens with L glass, photoshop software, etc can be super expensive!!! So you can invest the time, money and energy OR hire a professional. :-)
A digital compact - which are usually affordable and easy to use, will certainly yield better pictures than the iPhone. ;-)
Hope that helps. Good luck.

Johnny,
Happy 100th post!
I just love your photos!
I was wondering what kind of camera(s) you use or if you could recommend one for taking dog photos?
I think the article said you use a Cannon single reflex. Is it a digital camera? Is it one a beginner could use?
Right now I just use my iphone. My dogs move around so much that many of the photos are blurry.
Thanks for any advice,
Susan and Penny

Happy wiener Wednesday!!!
A few quick shares, if you'll indulge me.
1) Yesterday I published my 100th post on Rufus on the Web: http://wp.me/p27Fw1-cH. It was very exciting for me and I sincerely appreciate everyone who has been supportive of the website and my photography endeavor. Thank you. It's really just a small passion project of mine, but your support is anything but small.
2) Speaking of… there was a recent article published about me and my photography. If you got some free time, check it out: http://patch.com/A-skwk; it just a fun human interest profile piece. I'm flattered to be featured. ;-)
3) Finally and most importantly, Monday I photographed a bonded pair of longhair doxies in need of their forever home for SCDR.org: http://wp.me/p27Fw1-cX; please cross post, forward, tweet, retweet, etc. Some of the pictures actually came out rather nice I think. See below / attached.
Okay friends. Thanks for reading. Have a great day!!!
