I'll give you a first hand for instance. Tovi, my bitch, is a beautifully
proportioned bitch. She is a wonderful dog with excellent temperament and
impeccable bloodlines including stellar med tests on all her recent
ancestors. She was intended for breeding and we welcomed her into our home
along with our show dog.
When she was old enough, we had her hips tested but, before we had a chance
to test her heart, she began having problems. We were not sure what was
wrong, at first but she was having seizures. After a few episodes and
careful record keeping, we and the Vet have determined she has idiopathic
epilepsy. She has since been spayed, thus removing her from the gene pool.
She is still a valued and beloved member of our family and always will be.
But she will never have puppies as we will never knowingly breed a dog with
anything approaching a potential genetic threat to our breed.
Unlike some people.

The problem with genetic defects is that not all defects are visible to the
naked eye. Heart problems for one. Many dogs with heart problems have been
shown and finished championships, and were bred and passed it down to the
next generation.
