Problem with the undocked tails is Boxers have not been bred for tails.
You wouldn't think that was important BUT (and as a former teacher use
to say ... And this is the Big But) .... the tails get fairly skinny
toward the end. And there is a LOT of power in those muscular rear ends.
Think about your dog wagging his tail as furiously as they do. Now,
imagine a long tail. Many of the docked breed owners in the countries
where it has been made illegal have been trying desperately to get that
changed. When that thin tail smacks into tables, walls, doors, etc., the
undocked dogs are getting fractures. You can't set a tail. And in many
cases, the dogs have had to have (dangerous) major surgery to dock their
tails, rather than the fairly simple docking of tails at 3-days. At that
time, the tails are much smaller. The bone is basically gristle, not
hard bone. All it takes is a bit of novocaine to deaden the pain.
When the ears are cropped, they are just not "cut off." Instead there
are stitches taken to make a "bell" at the base. That both helps to get
the ears to stand as well as a sound catcher. *I* have not had a lot of
problems with the dogs not catching sound they want. Some I've left my
dogs with natural ears for 20 years now. And, unless I planned to
actively show, I won't crop. However, none of my dogs, except Cooper,
have really had a proper "ear set" for natural ears and so the flap
hasn't been completely covering the ear opening.
