The third reason for cropping was and is to increase the accuracy of the
dog's ability for echolocation. Being guard dogs, Boxers are also very
sensitive to sound. Mine HATE my surround sound system. They'll actually
leave the room if I am watching a movie on surround. Anyway, studies have
shown that cropped dogs have 60% better echolocation accuracy than uncropped
dogs. that is, among Boxers. Just like the long ears of blood hounds and
bassets are to help 'scoop' the scent towards their noses, so the ability to
move their ears like antennae gives them a better chance of precisely
locating a sound.
Because I now realize how sensitive their hearing can be and how important
locating sounds is to them, psychologically, I'll always crop my puppies. If
I adopt a dog beyond cropping age, obviously, I won't. but a small pup,
whether a pet or for show, will be cropped so they will always be best able
to know where a sound they hear originates.

Some dogs with uncropped ears do have more troubled with ear infections
(because the moisture stays in the "closed" ear). Knowing that, just keep
them clean.

"bell" at the base of the ear to help catch sounds (cropping isn't just
cutting off the "excess" ear, it also involves stitching together the
outside edges of the part of the ear nearest the head to provide that bell
and also helps the ears to stand). The second function of the cropped ear
was to have less for an opponent to grab and restrain the dog. Remember,
they were bred not only as a "companion" but also as a "guard".

But if you aren't planning to show, a natural ear is fine.
