If you are not actively confirmation showing, there is no need to crop. Some dogs with uncropped ears do have more troubled with ear infections (because the moisture stays in the "closed" ear). Knowing that, just keep them clean.
Cropping had two functions. One was to produce an upright ear with a deep "bell" at the base of the ear to help catch sounds (cropping isn't just cutting off the "excess" ear, it also involves stitching together the outside edges of the part of the ear nearest the head to provide that bell and also helps the ears to stand). The second function of the cropped ear was to have less for an opponent to grab and restrain the dog. Remember, they were bred not only as a "companion" but also as a "guard".
Cropping needs to be done basically by the 12th week for the best results. But if you aren't planning to show, a natural ear is fine.

Subject: [boxer lovers] Cropping Ears and Docking Tails
What are the pros and cons of leaving a dog unaltered, or it's ears cropped and tail docked.
I've seen discussion, but I can't seem to find the end of the any of the threads, so I thought I'd start a new one. Hopefully the subject line will make it an search for others who want more information on the subject.
