My Pickles will be 3 in May & Shelby will be 1 in May, about 2 weeks apart. We will have a party for them! They are ½ brothers. In reference to the wrestling around .. we have that here at least 5 times a day. Shelby was here for about 3 days when it started. I have my own YouTube clip of that in the links below. He was barely 5 pounds to Pickles 18 pounds but that did not matter – it was >>game on<< many times a day. Shelby is probably about 16 pounds now.
I would like to second the earlier post about Doxies are the best play mates for Doxies – to the point I could have written it word for word myself. I am **very** worried about a larger dog playing and possibly hurting one of the boys. Further, Pickles has little dog attitude & does not get along well with larger dogs. He gets big teeth pretty quickly after the first sniff around and that could get him into trouble.
It is difficult to say who is dominant because there really is not much yipping when they wrestle. A lot of teeth are shown and a fair amount of play biting but nothing aggressive at all. I got very lucky in that respect!
The fear of bigger dogs playing roughly is exactly why I started my group the South Jersey Dachshund Club. At the time we thought we were going to be a 1 dog family so I wanted equal dogs for Pickles to play and exercise with. We have had up to 12 Doxies here for parties. Late last spring I looked at our breeder’s puppy page (a very dangerous thing to do) and got hooked so we are now a very happy 2 Doxie family which I am very sure will remain for a while. I am not as worried about Pickles getting exercise. That is Shelby’s job to keep him busy!
Thank You
