Whenever I wonder how "bad" the alert should be, I touch my dogs around the neck area, especially the throat. If they alert and I HEAR a growl, I know the "problem" is not as near as it is when I can only FEEL the growl. Boxers are sneaky. If they catch the problem in time, that deep growly bark is the announcement "I'm here and you DO NOT want to advance." That silent growl says "Somehow you got too close and now I have to deal with you."
I love these dogs.
