Gumball is a beautiful white boxer mix who is partially or completely
deaf; she is 6 months old and weighs about 38 lbs. Gumball came to MD SPCA
from another shelter, so we have almost no background information on her. Her
intake exam shows that she had dirty fur and needed a bath; that she was
very active and mouthy; also the doctor notes that Gumball appears to be deaf
– that she does not respond to whistles or hand claps. Everything else in
the intake exam was normal.
Gumball was adopted by a family of inexperienced dog owners and returned
after one day for mouthiness and general high activity level. On the first
day, Gumball began to get excited and was barking and nipping at the
15-year-old; everyone in the family then began to get excited and the situation
escalated, with Gumball biting at the pants leg of the father. There was no
bite incident, but the family did return Gumball because of her behavior.
The notes from Gumball's behavior assessment show she is jumpy, relaxed,
exuberant, easily distracted, mouthy, dominant, outgoing, very friendly,
jumps while on leash, tugs on leash with mouth, likes to cuddle, knows how to
sit, drags handler toward passing dogs and people; she needs direction,
leadership, focus and manners – needs obedience class right away, and is full
of play and puppy energy; that she is smart and very food motivated.
