Cricket

Last night one of our dachshunds, Cricket, who we have yet to be able to place up for adoption due to medical problems started vomiting pure blood last night and was rushed to the emergency room. Here is information from her foster mom Laura Coulombe:

"Around 11pm I was cleaning up my kitchen and decided to get everyone settled in for the night and I watched in horror as Cricket threw up almost an entire measuring cup size of pure blood. No clumps, food, water, bile, just blood. I have never in  my life seen a dog throw up that much blood. I immediately called the emergency clinic located almost an hour away and jumped in the car.

When I got there the triage nurse checked her over and said that she was stable and I would be taken into an exam room in a little while. Once in the exam room and after her vitals were taken and it was determined that she was okay the doctor came in to do a thorough exam. Both abdominal palpitations came back tender but no pain. Cricket was dehydrated but according to her outward symptoms, only slightly. The doctor said they didn't know what was causing this and asked about ingesting poisons, or toys that could cause blockage. Negative to both. She asked if I was sure that she threw up the blood and not pooped it. I told her I saw the whole incident. She said she was concerned about the blood after looking at the amount on the blanket I brought in. She offered to allow me to take her home but said she would feel more comfortable if I admitted her which of course I did.

About an hour ago I received a call from the doctor stating that her blood work came back extremely abnormal. High white blood cell count but not cancerous. BUN levels for the kidneys are elevated as well as many other counts that were really off. Her temp is low and her clotting time is long. She is at risk for bleeding so they need to limit the amount of tests and if possible wait on surgery if it is required until the experienced staff doctors come in at 8am. The doctor may very well need to give her fluids but the only ones that Cricket could endure based on her blood test results would be plasma. The doctor is running additional tests such as urine, kidney, and something else (I forget). She said that if everything went well that I would hear from her tomorrow morning around 11am. She said that she doesn't expect things to go well and that she will probably be calling me again this morning.

Cricket is a lot more sick than she thought but said that she was not in any pain and hardly any discomfort which I believe because Cricket was happy as a clam when I left. She is very concerned about her. She is testing for Addison's Disease, that was the third thing. I asked if her condition could have anything to do with the neurological problems she has with her incontinence and she said "that's a very good question, and I hope not" because if it was neurological it would most likely mean meningitis."
WE WILL SEND OUT A PICTURE AND UPDATE OF CRICKET AS SOON AS WE CAN TODAY!

DONATE NOW!! This has been a rough rescue week for Furever Dachshund Rescue! We lost Beau to Parvo, another puppy we saved died, also Laura Coulombe our Chairperson had to put her senior doxie Lucky to sleep due to very ill health.
Furever Dachshund Rescue has taken in several dachshunds in need of urgent veterinary care and there are a few more that need our help still in shelters. Our funds are extremely low and we are pleading to everyone to please send a donation. Even if you can only spare a few dollars every little bit will help us to help these dachshunds.

The dachshunds that are in the shelters are in cages that are open to the weather conditions around them and with the cold temperatures moving in this is detrimental to dachshunds. Here are some we just brought in to foster homes that need vetting ASAP:

We have three dachshunds being surrendered in South Carolina:

Murray - 13 year old red male that is being surrendered. He has not received any vetting in two years. We are unsure of heartworm status.

Sassy - 5 year old silver dapple who has not received vetting.

Zoey - 2 year old silver dapple that has not received vetting.

There are two in Alabama that we need to pull:

Holly & Hanna - a 5 - 6 year old black/tan female who was found as a stray with her 8 - 10 week old puppy. They are in a shelter that only has outside runs.  We are trying to get them out and vetted.

Please help us help Cricket and all the others dachshunds we have saved- without donations we have to turn them away! Please help us say YES instead of NO, we don't want to turn them away! We can only do it with the help of your donations! So please don't turn away, say YES and send in a donation even if all you can afford is a few dollars! Every cent helps, every cent makes a difference!
