Steve:
I don't think you can start training too early! My Boxer is both treat and praise driven. I started with all treats and after several weeks, went to occasional no treat and all praise. Now Heidi is almost 11 months old and will do any and all of her trained bits with no treat rewards. I don't always give her treats when she performs, but substitute it with TONS of praise. Always make sure you keep your Boxer well exercised and have plenty of appropriate chew toys to his/her disposal. I recommend staying away from rawhide chews. I have gotten her beef bones (from Petsmart) that are hollow and when I am away, I fill the cavity with peanut butter. She spends hours trying to get to the peanut butter that is just out of her reach and that protects my furniture. If you haven't already, crate train right now. My Heidi was 12 weeks old when we brought her home and she had never been in a crate. She had such anxiety in a crate that when I
would get home, the contents of the cage and the floor around it was totally soaked with her drewl/slobber. From that point, I just confined her to a safe area in the house.
Just give your baby tons of love and attention, toys and praise and training and you will be very happy with your baby Boxer!

Hello All,
Just joined the group. Last Saturday I bought my family are new puppy a 7 week old boxer. I joined this group hoping to learn more about the breed and fun things to do with this breed. I have owned a American Bulldog in the past so I am used to higher energy dogs. I own a bullmastiff who is 7 years old and completely blind and a 2 year old basset hound are my other 2 dogs. My first big question to anyone on the group is what is the best way to train a boxer? And do I start now or at 10 weeks? Any tips on rules to establish early with this breed besides house training? Any particular books or web sites I should read to further my knowledge on the boxer breed? Any and all info is greatly appreciated and I look forward to enjoying the post in the group.
Thanks
Steve
