Lauren,
First of all thank you for adopting a doxie that obviously did not have a great start in life, and wanting to work with him rather than ditching him in a shelter. It will take time to gain his trust, so one thing is to make his carrier or cage a home of safety and try not to violate it. He will learn to come out to go outside and do his business, dogs usually don't like to soil where they live. You can go a long way by just being there in a non-threatening way I know a doxie adopter in a similar straight who used to come home and get a glass of wine, her Kindle and just sit on the floor in sight of the cage opening and spend an hour every night just being there and reading, and tossing her scared little girl a treat she had to get a little bit out of the carrier to get. Now they are fast fearless friends. You might want to talk to your vet, too. Also , training one-on-one with a good trainer can go an enormous way towards a dogs confidence That worked great with my badly abused and fearful brother and sister rescue doxies. Finally, there are some medical aids that may assist. A french company makes a collar called D.A.P. that is saturated with a synthetic version of a pheromone that mama dogs emit after birth to calm the puppies. Another is Novafit, which is an encapsulated dog-focused version of a chemical called Sam-E which has been proven to influence a fearful, anxious or older dog to be less anxious and fearful; there is clinical evidence that proves it works. It worked well with my 8 year-old boy doxie after his lifetime bonded sister died from kidney disease. I would of course talk to my vet first

> I adopted a 1 year 5 month old male dachshund on Tuesday and Well the just shy quiet stage has ended. After a nap in his cage this morning he finally stepped out of the cage and then I had to try to corner him it was the only way I could pick him up. He thrashed around and tried to bite me when I tried to pick him up. Same thing happened when he was done outside in his fenced in area. I attached his leash to his halter and put him down. He of couse does not like being led around on the leas while I tried to do some things So he thrased around again and actually got loose of his harness so I had to quietly try to put the leash back on his collar and my brother spend a few minutes with him but then my brother left him without letting me know so I had to catch his leash then again he thrashed around and got loose of his collar. So I tried again to put his collar back on and pick him up. I did pick him up but not without him trying to jump around and bite me again. And during the minute he was loose he tried to scent mark again. I know he did not heed to pee as he was just outside and peed 4 times and pooped. I got upset and started to cry I dont know what to do except keep him either outside or in his crate. I cant have him marking everywhere and he wont stay on a leash. HELP!!
