How are you measuring your dachsie? From nose to butt? Nose to end of tail?
My standard dachsie (18 inches from withers to base of tail, so
probably about 29 inches if you include her head and neck) fit nicely
into a medium-sized travel crate. She was from Washington State so she
flew to me here in Minnesota. She slept in that crate for the rest of
her life---it was cozy. She didn't spend days in the crate, it was
just her refuge and den.
The smallest crate possible is better for travel, IMO---your dog
should be able to stand up and turn around. If there is turbulence you
don't want him to have so much room he gets thrown around and hurt.
