We got the call from The Stokes County Shelter asking us for help; not only for the dachshunds but for the other purebreds this person was breeding. There were Chihuahua 's, Peke's, Cocker's, Mini Pin's and others…..25 dogs in all. The Stokes County shelter is a very small shelter run by people who care and are rescue friendly. They literally had nowhere to house this many in an already over crowded shelter.
We put out an email asking for help with all the dogs except the dachshunds, Jim and I knew we would be taking them in. To the shelters amazement rescues came forward and within 24 hours all the dogs were in rescue.
This economy has not been kind to pets. People are losing their homes, their jobs and can no longer take care of their families let alone pets. This has made it even harder for shelters and rescues that are very overcrowded as it is and Doxie Acre is no exception. Adoptions are slow because people can't afford it and donations have been practically non-existent.
Jim and I are lucky to still be employed but with the rising cost of literally everything we are pinching pennies as I'm sure everyone is doing. So you can imagine just how difficult it has been to also continue rescuing. We are asking for donations to help get these sweet kids vetted. All are just delightful kids with sweet personalities. They are starving for attention, all very skinny and all deserve a second chance.
Some have skin issues that we think may be due to flea allergies. All were full of parasites. Their teeth are just horrible, all will need dentals even the youngest. We are hoping that none are heartworm positive or have extenuating medical issues, we won't know till all have seen our vet. You know the cost of vetting a dog. All these kids need to be spayed or neutered, all vaccines, all tests, dentals and anything thing else needed to make them healthy. The vetting of these kids will easily be several thousand dollars.
