Dear luciano,

Over the past few months, hundreds of thousands of Australians have stepped up in a truly inspiring call for an end to the suffering of animals in the live export trade.

Many caring MPs have also spoken out against this cruel trade, but tragically, Julia Gillard's refusal to allow them a conscience vote has meant that Bills to end live exports were voted down today.

But all is not lost — it is clear that despite today's result, our strategy is working. Knowing that support for an end to live exports continues to grow, Andrew Wilkie and The Australian Greens have announced that they will reintroduce legislation on live export.

As an industry that thrives only when hidden from the scrutiny of the public, live export has one major weakness — exposure. We will continue to ensure that we bring the suffering that they are responsible for to the attention of the public and politicians. Today Animals Australia publicly released evidence from an investigation that I conducted in Turkey two weeks ago.

The footage of frightened animals being hoisted by a rear leg onto an overhead conveyor line before being slaughtered fully conscious is among the most callous I've witnessed. On my return from Turkey evidence from this investigation was presented to Gillard government — but despite this cruel treatment breaching international guidelines, no action has been taken to prevent further animals from being shipped to Turkey.

We have ensured that a growing number of MPs are voicing their opposition to the live trade, equally as appalled as we are. Many more are struggling to quieten their conscience.

Please stay with us on this journey. We have reached a most critical time to keep pressure on the government and let them know that Australians will never forgive, nor forget the suffering that the live trade is responsible for — and that we will not support a government that is prepared to abandon our animals and our ethical principles.

With the continued exposure of this brutal industry, and the efforts of everyday Australians calling on their representatives for change, it is not a question of if live export will end, but when.

Please help today by taking action on our website and sharing this latest investigation with those who care.
