I agree with your assessment of the media story. I'm sure it was always understood Hawkeye would stay with the friend who "babysat" him while his owner was deployed. If nothing else, it would be easier for Hawkeye. A good pet owner has contingency plans in place. The kennel where I board has the names and phone numbers of Meg and Cooper's breeders, who have both agreed to find them homes should something happen to me. Luckily they know each other so it's even possible they'd work together to try and place the monsters, er, darlings together. There is No Way my parents in their very late 80s could take them.

Oh, I understand there can be limitations on the family. I just would not
have thought there would be a question that Hawkeye would be cared for in
some way. The story makes it seem as if he would have been in a shelter. I
think that is a problem on the press's fault (as usual!) I'm thinking, in a
case like this, this dog would have a good home, somewhere, no matter what!.
For myself, I would keep him as a link to my child. But, then again, it
might be a painful reminder for some families. I can see the many angles
involved. I just hate that anyone even hinted that there may have been
anything but a home somewhere for this great dog. I am glad he is with
someone who loved Jon as much as he did.

I heard this morning about this. I wonder why the family of the fallen
soldier could not take him? Either way, I am glad he has a good home.
