CROSSPOSTING FOR SWEET LITTLE OTTO WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH IN HIS LIFE***PLEASE READ ABOUT OTTO BELOW...IF YOU CAN RESCUE/FOSTER THIS SWEET BOY, PLEASE CONTACT PENNY JAFFE AT Otto originally belonged to a 72 year old woman who lived with her son who they are pretty sure kicked this dog severely. When the authorities went in they smelled something horrid and found a dead dog. So he has been pretty neglected and abused. Otto was seized and cruelty charges filed (guilty verdict) in May 2011. He was hairless with thick, scaley skin and a horrible odor. He was slated to go to rescue in MN until I noticed Otto's breathing was labored; we took an xray. He had a diaphragmatic hernia (hole in his diaphragm) in addition to a full-body skin infection (yeast). The MN rescue instructed me to euthanize Otto. I couldn't do it. Long story short, I raised the funds for surgery which needed to happen as soon as his infection cleared. However, Otto's condition worsened as his abdominal organs shifted into his chest thru the hole. He wouldn't eat (except donut holes) and couldn't walk 3 feet without stopping. Otto received his surgery on 6/30/2011. His recovery went well and he has no permanant damage from the hernia. I do know that Otto is totally ok now other than getting some yeast infections now and then on his skin. The diaphram is totally repaired and he is fine.
We played around with Otto's diet as this seemed to be the cause of his yeast and skin problems, and Otto started gaining weight. He received his 'medical release' by the vet last week. For the time being, he continues to need medicated baths every 7-10 days) and meds for residual yeast (and he now has an ear infection. grrr), and requires a hypoallergenic diet (1 cup Natural Balance Sweet Potato& fish (dry) + 1/4 can Wellness Salmon, 2x/day).
Little Man Otto (he answers to 'Little Man' and to 'Otto') appears to be neutered (we don't have a full history), is current on vaccines (except bordetella) and is hw negative (receiving HeartGard Plus on the 15th of each month). Pre-surgical bloodwork and post-op xrays were taken as a 'base-line.' Otto is 3-6 years old & now weighs 28 lbs. He smart & independent, confident, friendly, good with other dogs, likes to slay stuffed toys (can be toy possessive), chomp on a bone, ride in the car, eat donut holes, sleep on the couch, and bark at UPS trucks. He is crazy for a rare treat of vanilla ice cream. He is housebroken.
Otto can be stubborn. He is not an aggressive dog, just a knucklehead. He can be really playful and at such times he will be mouthy (uses his mouth alot but has never bitten or broken skin). He is not trying to hurt, just a little ornery.... He can be an escape artist. Depending on the cat, he can be disinterested, curious, or a jerk. Although he likes them, Otto should not be in a home with children due to the improper use of his mouth, especially when he is frustrated. Please, please help me find rescue or a foster home for this baby...he has ben through so much and deserves to live a wonderful life in a wonderful forever home! Thank you. Penny
