New hope for animals

Dear luciano,

I'm writing to you today with renewed hope as members of the ALP are poised to discuss a critical motion that could save millions of animals from suffering the horrors of having their throats cut while fully conscious. This is a direct result of our live export investigations and our supporters' determination to hold politicians to account.

Thank you for making this possible. Read about the new motion and more breaking news below, and please add your voice to help ensure this motion is passed.

URGENT: Call on Labor to prevent brutal slaughter

Many people are shocked to learn that despite new restrictions for the continuation of live export, there are no guarantees that animals will be stunned before slaughter. As a result, most animals exported from Australia still have their throats cut while fully conscious and die a slow and painful death. A new move by concerned Labor backbenchers offers real hope that this practice could soon be outlawed. A 'notice of motion' put forward by Labor MP Tony Zappia is soon due for debate in caucus and if passed would prohibit live export to all destinations where it cannot be guaranteed that animals be stunned unconscious before slaughter.

7.30

Wednesday's 7.30 covered the official investigation of 100+ ‘restraint boxes' which were installed by Australia's live export industry in Indonesia, assisted by $2 million in taxpayer funding. Until Animals Australia exposed the brutal nature of these boxes, the live export industry claimed they were designed to ensure animal welfare. Nothing could be further from the truth.
