| GREENVILLE, SC......POPPERS is an 8 year old Dachshund that was an owner turn in. He was dropped off at the shelter in Greenville, SC. I can't even imagine what kind of person can take a loyal member of their family and hand him over to someone knowing his chances of being euthanized are very high. Sweet Poppers has a medical condition that is treatable with surgery. He has a Salivary Mucocele. The cause of salivary mucoceles is rarely identified, although trauma such as from choke collars, bite wounds, or chewing on foreign materials is generally considered to be the most likely initiating event. As the saliva leaks from the torn salivary gland or duct, it accumulates in the tissue and initiates an intense inflammatory response. A connective tissue capsule gradually forms around the saliva to prevent it from migrating further. If the mucocele is not removed, the animal can die a terrible death. He can starve to death because he can't swallow or he will suffocate because it cuts off his air supply. We were contacted when the shelter staff realized Poppers neck was swelling. He had to get out immediately or they were going to have to put him to sleep. Once we got the pictures of him, we knew he had to get to the vet ASAP. The first vet he went to recommended draining the Mucocele and seeing if it formed again. If it formed again, then he was going to have to go to a Surgical Specialist that could remove the Mucocele and not do any damage in the process. It did form and we immediately took him to a specialist to have it removed. Poppers has had his surgery and is recovering. He has lots of swelling in his throat / neck area that will go down in a couple of weeks. He is so sweet and adorable. We love little Poppers. He has been through so much and is giving kisses the entire time. Poppers is going to make some lucky family very happy. He is the best dog and loves everyone. He has an incredible personality. He will be available for adoption, once he fully recovers from his surgery.
