Aletha,
Thank you for the recipe. Question: Do you make patti's and bake the mixture? I know the dogs are getting old and well....the cat is already old and has outlived the longevity of the kids living at home. Tonight as I looked at Bozworth, I couldn't help but have him crawl on my lap while I was in the recliner. Its ripping my heart out to see how much weight he has lost. I can see his hip bones, but his gums are still very pink and he has good spirits.
Your kindness is appreciated.
Frances

I have no idea why your dog might be loosing weight. I am sending you the formula I use to make Satin/Fat balls to keep/add weight to my babies. You will see that I take the basic recipe and add to it.
Satin Balls Half Recipe -- recommended amount to mix up
5 lbs cheap hamburger (for high fat %)
1/2 large box Total cereal (about 6 cups cereal)
1/2 large box uncooked oatmeal (about 7.5 cups oats)
5 raw eggs
1/2 of 15oz jar wheat germ (about 2 cups)
5 packages Knox unflavored gelatin
5/8 cup vegetable oil (this is pretty close to 2/3 cup)
5/8 cup unsulphered molasses
I add a couple of cloves of grated garlic and a couple of small grated apples, also 2 pkgs of cream cheese, 1 small container of whipping cream, 1 jar of organic peanut butter, a container (small) of cottage cheese( organic if you can get it) and a container of live culture, I use Danon, yogurt. I have access to pure Ribbon Cane syrup and I use it instead of molasses. I also keep boiled eggs to feed as a snack. Luckily I can get fresh yard eggs.Duncan hates his omega potent fish oil so I mix a small amount with his daily feedings and he never notices it.
The half recipe, using hamburger that is 20% fat calories, has 12,400 calories. The last batch I made ended up making 22 patties, so each has about 560 calories. This is good if you have big dogs (Danes). If your dog is smaller you might want to make your Satin Balls or patties smaller.
I find that making the half recipe is so much easier that it is worth doing even though you have half-boxes of things around for awhile and have to mix it up twice as often. The disadvantage of the full recipe is the need of a really BIG container and it is very hard work to mix
I have been known to take some of the Satin ball food and mix with his raw dog food and just feed him all he will eat. He loves both.

Does anyone have suggestions as to why my boxer is losing weight? I haven't changed his diet. In June, I took my 10-year old boxer to the vet. He had a kidney infection, which we treated with antibiotics (is over that) and blood tests (which were fine).
At that time the vet informed me he was in early stages of kidney failure but couldn't tell me how long he would live. Even before the visit to the vet, he had started having urinary accidents, unintentional, he just can't hold it. In fact, he tries licking up the urin while looking at me with his big sad brown eyes, as if saying I'm sorry mom.
He is now becoming horribly thin, while my other 10-year old is healthy even though she had a stroke six years ago. I worked with her training to walk again. Her gimp leg is getting worse and hip displaysia has set in. Kids are grown and pets are old, have a 20-year old cat too.
Anyway, the dogs used to sleep with me, now, they have to sleep on their beds beside mine. For my buddy Bozworth who seems to be happy, what type of food would you recommend me to feed him? Has anybody else experienced this? If so what would you recomend?
Thanks,
Chillinnco
