Dear luciano,

This week has been extraordinary.

What I witnessed in Indonesia during the six most difficult nights of my life has now ignited the entire country with one determined aim — to ensure our Government puts an end to the torture that was inflicted on Bill and other animals like him in the live animal export trade.

Monday night's Four Corners story sent shockwaves across Australia. Such was the demand of viewers to express outrage at Australia's cruel live export industry, that immediately after the program our joint Animals Australia/RSPCA Australia campaign website BanLiveExport.com temporarily crashed under a tremendous flood of traffic. So too did the site of our campaign partner GetUp!, whose petition against live exports has now exceeded an unprecedented 160,000 signatures in less than three days.

Yet as I write this, thousands more cattle are being loaded onto ships bound for Indonesia. Outrage over the treatment of Australian cattle in Indonesia has been the talking point throughout Australia and the halls of Parliament House since Four Corners aired, yet the one person who has the ultimate power to protect Australian cattle from cruel treatment in Indonesia has remained deafeningly silent. Julia Gillard needs to act now.

The Gillard Government may have been able to claim that they were unaware of the horrors that animals would face in Indonesian slaughterhouses before, but now they are fully aware. It is unforgiveable that they would knowingly condone Australian cattle being sent to this fate. Every day of inaction sees thousands more animals needlessly brutalised in the abattoirs of Indonesia and other countries where Australian animals continue to be exported.

Even if you have already written to Julia Gillard, I appeal to you to email and write to her again. She needs to know that we are never going to forget the inexcusable abuse exposed by Four Corners or forgive her government if they fail to act to protect other Australian cattle.

Under immense pressure, the Gillard Government's token response of suspending supply to the 11 abattoirs that I visited will do nothing to help animals who are destined for any one of the other 100-odd abattoirs that kill Australian animals in equally horrendous ways every night throughout Indonesia.

Two of our best politicians have heard the voice of Australia and aren't prepared to stand by and let this cruelty continue. On Tuesday, independents Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon announced that they would be submitting private members bills later this month to ban the live export of all animals.

And yesterday — we were heartened to learn that the Australian Veterinary Association, who had previously supported the live trade, has now joined our calls to stop cattle from being sent to Indonesia.

This immense tide of public concern signals our greatest ever opportunity to put an end to this brutal trade once and for all.

Please help ensure we receive justice for Bill by casting your vote against live exports today and encouraging friends and family to do the same.

Lyn For Bill's sake,
Lyn

P.S. ABC1's Four Corners coverage of our Indonesian live export investigation could not have been more damning — or accurate. If you missed this unforgettable program, it will air again on ABC News 24 at 8pm this Saturday, or watch it online.
