I agree with you Jan....100%. Why make more work for yourself when they will be perfectly willing and able to go outside if you take them out and train them to do just that. You would not allow your human children to poop and pee on your floor, would you? Nor would you beat them for it, I hope. You just need to be consistent and firm, then praise.
