Re: introduction and questions

Congrats on your new addition!  We have a "standard" dachsie named Seigfried (Ziggy for short), although he's only about 13 lbs, so he's really a tweenie.

Pee-pee pads were used in the house (out of necessity due to some surgery I had).  He is trained and only very rarely goes in the house.  As soon as he does that, however, he slinks away and hides under a chair or in a closet because he knows he's in trouble.  Just be patient and consistent, and the training will come.

Ziggy can swim.  Actually, his daddy has taken him kayaking, complete with a doggie life vest!  He keeps trying to convince me to let him take him on the motorcycle, but I draw the line there!

As for back issues, dachsies are very prone to back problems.  Growing up, we had 2 long-haired.  One morning we woke up and found that one of them was paralyzed.  She wasn't really a jumper, but sometimes they can get underfoot, so that may have been what happened.  Anyway, after cage rest and some time, she eventually was able to walk again, although her back had a permanent curve in it.  Both of them lived to about 17 (same litter).

If yours is a jumper, we got pet stairs at a local pet store.  We bought them about 2 years ago.  Great idea!  Training our puppy to use them, however,......not so easy.  Ziggy is stubborn (a typical dachsie trait) and will only use them if he absolutely has to.  Usually, he just does his "prairie dog" stand or sits on the floor by the bed and waits to be lifted up onto the bed.

You might consider taking her to obedience class.  Could cut down on the jumping around if he learns the commands well.  We took Ziggy first to PetSmart and it was okay, but we later found a really great one at a local doggie gym.  You should check some out if you go that route.  Ziggy listens to Daddy much better than he does to me.  Before his work hours changed, his daddy actually took him to the local VA as a registered pet therapy dog, and he was quite the hit!

Good luck!

Carla
