I have found the very best method to housebreak a dog or puppy is consistency and rewards. They are exactly like kids are to housebreak. YOU have to remind them, perhaps every 20-30 minuets at first and gradually further between times. Each time they do their duty outside, be it wet or pooh, a reward is given immediately on going. Carry the doggie treat in your pocket. It only needs to be the smallest bite but the praise going along with it needs to be big and pleasant....good girl (boy). They respond to and need to make you happy! You may have to go out with them to accomplish the job.

 

I have 3 that go out to do the jobs. I never fail to praise them even yet....they expect it and want to be the "good" one. I do go out with mine to make sure they go. Mine do go on the command, "Go potty",  which is very convenient especially when needing a specimen for vet.

 

Any dog will go on command if you say it to them enough, no matter their age.
